In Camera Lucida, Roland Barthes theorized about "studium" and "punctum" in photographs. Studium is what you "study" and intellectualize about the image, its history and context. Punctum is the sharp detail that "punctures" and wounds you, a detail that resonates deeply, confirming its truth and reality.
